You need to know . . .
If you have not already done so you should, as soon as possible, file a FAFSA for the 2010-2011 academic year. You are encouraged to complete and submit your FAFSA on-line. You may access the FAFSA web site through our Apply for Financial Aid (FAFSA) web page. By filing a FAFSA undergraduate Illinois residents are also completing the application process for the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant and first-time freshman are completing the application process for the Silas Purnell Illinois Incentive for Access (IIA) Program Grant. Please be informed, however, that the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has announced that it has suspended, as of April 19, 2010, the processing of new MAP grants for the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year, due to depletion of the appropriated funding for the MAP grant. ISAC had previously announced that it will not fund IIA grants at all for 2010-2011 this year due to lack of funding. For further information please review ISAC's announcement on its College Zone web site.
Important information for all borrowers of Federal Stafford, Parent PLUS and Graduate PLUS loans:
On March 30, 2010, President Barack Obama signed legislation mandating that by July 1, 2010, the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program, in which Chicago State University has participated for decades, would be phased out and that from that date forward students and parents desiring to avail themselves of Stafford and PLUS loans will have a single source for funding, the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, commonly known as “Direct Loan(s)” or “DL”. Chicago State University has transitioned from FFEL to Direct Loans and now utilizes Direct Loans as the single source for Stafford and PLUS loan funding.
The University views this as a most positive development as it simplifies the application process for students and parents, as well as streamlines the certification of eligibility process by the Office of Student Financial Aid staff. During this period of transition we ask your indulgence as we incorporate the new regulations into our procedures and make necessary adjustments to our systems. It is anticipated that by the Fall 2010 semester this will be an almost entirely paperless process for students, parents and staff.
It will be necessary for all students desiring loans to complete a new Direct Loans Master Promissory Note (MPN). Parents and Graduate students seeking PLUS loan will have to complete a new PLUS MPN. Stafford and Graduate PLUS borrowers will also have to complete new Entrance Counseling (Debt Management) sessions. There can be no exceptions to these requirements as they are mandated by the Direct Loan program. The U.S. Department of Education has created the new StudentLoans.gov web site that will greatly simplify the completion of the aforementioned tasks. Please go to the StudentLoans.gov web site as soon as possible and complete your MPN and Entrance Counseling.
Please revisit this web page periodically for upcoming information regarding these new and exciting changes and don’t forget to read all e-mail communications from the Office of Student Financial Aid. Remember . . .
It is the responsibility of all students to keep themselves informed as to issues that may affect their financial aid eligibility by regularly accessing the Office of Student Financial Aid web site and CSU X-Press.
